Hundreds of Indian Pictographs are found along a rock bluff overlooking a once widely used Indian campground. At this outstanding rock art site, many of the paintings are remarkably well preserved. Most are thought to be 200-500 years old. Most paintings were made by the nomadic bands of hunters. There is also evidence that some other groups occupied the site for a considerable time.

Leon Plain pottery found at the site has been dated 900-1000 years old. The recent paintings are believed to have been painted by the Comanche, who lived in the area from the mid 1700’s to the 1860’s. Earlier paintings were probably made by Jumano, Lipan Apaches, Tonkawa, Kiowa, and possibly others. Recent discoveries of solar markers suggest that the site was once a spiritual meeting place of some tribes.

The site has been in the same family since the 1870’s. In an attempt to preserve the paintings, the site was closed to the public, but later reopened as public interest increased.

Nutritional Guidelines for Your Cow Herd

Cow EatingSolid nutrition starts with a sound forage program. To wean a healthy, viable calf every year, it is critical that your cow herd get proper nutrition. Forage research on a ranch is the backbone of a cow/calf operation. It gives the rancher something to build from and enables you to build supplemental programs to augment that forage.

A key factor for optimum forage and the most healthy calf production operation is to constantly fill gaps with good mineral programs. The nutrient requirements are different throughout the stages of production. Nutrient requirements are highest during the early stages of production. By matching up when your cow requires the highest nutritious forage to when the forage is at its highest nutrient content, will insure that your cow herd is in proper condition to ease through the production cycle.

heifer and calf

In this day and age, production costs are increasing and it becomes more and more important to keep cattle healthy to maximize their potential. That is why major emphasis needs to be put on the health of your heifers. They are the mainstay of the cattle industry. When your heifers are healthy they can wean their calves at their maximum potential.

What do you think the ideal weaning weight is for a calf?

What factors do you think go into achieving that goal?

In determining what feed will be most nutritionally beneficial for your herd, appropriate nutritional guidelines are essential.  What is your livestock getting? Your ultimate goal would be raising cows with a body condition in the 5 to 6 range. This condition level will make a substantial difference when calving begins, especially with your younger girls. The result of proper nutritional feeding practices will equip your cows to produce calves that will wean at 1/2 of their mother's weight, or more.

College Campus

Wow! What a topic! I can without a doubt say that the decision of where to go to college, and how I was going to afford furthering my education was the most important decision of my young life.  I know this question torments the minds of parents and teenagers across the nation. There is no way my parents or I could have been able to afford my education without the scholarships and grants I received.
